Books: Then and Now

From painstaking to painless, here are two fun videos that show the book printing process.

First, a 1947 video showing the painstaking process of typesetting and binding a book the old-fashioned way.

Then, a video of Village Books’ Espresso Book Machine, a print-on-demand option that can have a 200+ page paperback printed, bound, and ready for sale in minutes.

But then or now, the process begins with writing. Here are a few books available at the Burlington Public Library to help you take that first step.

The First Five Pages: a Writer’s Guide to Staying out of the Rejection Pile by Noah Lukeman
Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott
The Right to Write: an Invitation and Initiation into the Writing Life by Julia Cameron
Dan Poynter’s Self-Publishing Manual: How to Write, Print and Sell Your Own Book by Dan Poynter
